Flowers For No Particular Reason

A friend of mine just made it her Facebook status:

All I want is for someone to get me flowers for no particular reason.

It stood out with me because I remember I used to hate getting flowers for special occasions, it seemed trite and just- done. I told my then boyfriend who would become my future ex husband that I didn’t want him to buy me flowers, when really what it was was that I didn’t want flowers on certain occasions: Valentine’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries and the like.

Flowers are the type of thing that you get someone as a surprise, just a lovely way to say “I’m thinking about you”.

I had a boyfriend once when I lived in Athens who brought me flowers when he drove up from Macon to visit me- and I was in a panic because he was running late and I had plans for us and here he was coming in with flowers. I felt like such an ass but at the same time absolutely elated at the thought.

Another time I received flowers recently were of the digital kind- how so you may ask?  My friend and fellow writer Angel Collins posted a blog about giving digital flowers to her friends after another fellow artist friend, the Poet Daniel Muhammed, passed away. She mentioned me along with a bunch of our other friends in the article, and I was so touched to have been mentioned in that group.

To my friend with the status tonight, I give you digital flowers. You are a person with a kind soul and I think this is why you are where you are- because people of such kindness are often misunderstood and taken advantage of. It is something that I used to see as a weakness in myself, but I know now is a strength.

Angel, in her blog post about digital flowers, mentioned that she got the idea from G-Man Fantastic, also known as Garret Eason. I’m blessed to have creative friends such as these within my own circle, because many times I feel like they are the only ones that “get” me. Friends like my friend who inspired this post tonight as well, friends who are of a kind spirit who I know are lonely- and who I in turn can share my own loneliness with.

Well, I think it’s time I wrapped this up for now- the last time I rambled on Craig Hamilton told me I needed editing (this was true). So- for all of you out there who are feeling a little down and perhaps a little alone- this one is for you. I am grateful to each of you who takes the time to read my rambling unedited thoughts, and I hold you in my heart.

Love to all y’all,

Molly
